Proper Golf Stance
The 2 keys to
a proper golf stance are posture and alignment. Being
balanced makes it easier to be consistent when striking
the ball. A good stance in combination with the
correct grip will enable you to become successful at this
rewarding, yet sometimes frustrating game. It will allow
you to direct the flight of your ball, all the time,
instead of just some of the time. Your game becomes
predictable and consistent. And that is a good thing in
golf.
Proper Golf Stance - Staying in
Balance
Balance begins with the set up
for the swing. Your feet should be shoulder width apart. This
is the general rule for mid irons. The shorter irons require a
narrower stance, while the longer clubs need a wider stance.
The toe of the foot closest to the target should be rotated
three inches toward the target. The toe of the other foot
should be pointed on a perpendicular plane to the target. Back
should be straight with knees slightly flexed. The club should
be resting on the ground. Your weight should be in the balls of
your feet. Your arms should be forming a “v” in front of your
body.

Proper Golf Stance - Ball Position in Set
Up
The ball set up depends on the
kind of club you’re going to swing. For short irons the ball
needs to be in the center of your stance. Long irons and the
five wood, place the ball in center plus one golf ball length
forward of your normal position. In other words, center but a
little farther away from you, toward the target. For the
driver, move the ball two golf ball lengths to the center but
toward the target.
Proper Golf Stance - Checking Ball
Position
A way to determine if your
ball is placed correctly is to hold your club with your arms at
waist height and parallel to the ground. Bend over and drop you
arms. The ball must be placed where the club head touches the
ground. A farther ball position causes you to slouch and forces
you into bad posture which makes it difficult to hit the ball
correctly.
Proper Golf Stance - Good
Posture
Good posture equals a fairly
straight back, balanced foot position and head angled with your
spine to create a straight line, which will give you a proper
golf stance. Your weight should be evenly divided between the
ball of your feet and your heels. Your knees should be flexed
slightly. Keep your chin tucked and your arms and wrist loose,
not tense.
